Obsolete Computer Equipment has become something of a headache. If you have unwanted IT equipment to dispose of, then beware – it’s a time consuming business with many legal and financial pitfalls.
If you donate or sell your old PCs, you must ensure that any data is completely, irretrievably removed. Under the Data Protection Act you could face unlimited fines and lose your right to hold personal data.

You must also remember that you are responsible for the electrical safety of any goods even if you donate them! And don’t even think about throwing your old PCs in a skip. Apart from adverse public reaction, this practice is now the subject of UK and EEC regulation and is anyway an environmentally unfriendly act.

At BioTekNik we can resolve these issues for you. We see obsolete computer equipment as an asset. Apart from the fact that even old computers and their components may still have some useful life it should be remembered that there are other useful components:

Boards and processors have gold, platinum and other precious metals in their components. These are environmentally hazardous, but of course have a market value if retrieved in the right way.
Wiring has a copper components which is obtainable.
EPROMS and other chips can be wiped and remarketed, especially in the far east.
Hard drives and other components have some residual metal value which we can retrieve.

So What Can BioTekNik Do For You?

Our Computer Recycling Service works this way.

Once goods are removed, title of goods is transferred to BioTekNik and all responsibility for them is transferred to us.
Hard Drives are destructively formatted to erase all data and operating systems. A specialist data destruction facility is available using East-Tec Format Secure TM, approved by the US department of defence.
All Company distinguishing marks are removed.
A record of serial numbers is taken.
Metals, cables, boards, cpu’s, toner cartridges etc are passed to specialist companies for recycling. Any remaining waste is disposed of in compliance with local and national laws.
A certificate is issued confirming the above.
We currently achieve 95% recycling and, working with The Environment Agency, local Councils and many other interested parties, we are confident that we can achieve the 100% we aim for.
